EEI announces AES Ohio as Emergency Response Award recipient

June 13, 2023

AES Ohio, a subsidiary of The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES), was announced as an Edison Electric Institute (EEI) Emergency Response Award recipient. Presented to EEI member companies twice a year, the Emergency Response Awards recognize recovery and assistance efforts of electric companies following service disruptions caused by extreme weather or other natural events. The winners were chosen by a panel of judges following an international nomination process, and the awards were presented during EEI’s summer Board of Directors and CEO meeting held in conjunction with EEI 2023.

“Ensuring the safety of our customers, communities, and crews is our industry’s top priority,” said EEI President and CEO Tom Kuhn. “Safety is especially critical during severe storms and extreme weather events, such as AES Ohio’s commitment to restoring service for its customers safely and efficiently under challenging conditions following back-to-back severe weather events including five tornadoes. AES Ohio and its storm response team are extremely deserving of this national recognition, and I am honored to present them with this well-earned response award.”

AES Ohio experienced two consecutive severe wind events with gusts in excess of 70 mph including a tornado on March 25 and April 1. The damage encompassed the entire AES Ohio service territory and the duration of both storms lasted more than seven hours resulting in downed transmission and distribution power lines and poles. The National Weather Service in Wilmington, Ohio confirmed five tornado touchdowns on April 1 between 12:45 AM to 1:05 AM. Approximately 40,000 customers were without power during the peak outage for each storm event. To support efficient and safe restoration efforts, crews worked round the clock.

Kristina Lund, AES Ohio President, accepted the award on behalf of the company at the EEI board meeting. “We are pleased to receive the EEI Emergency Response Award,” said Lund. “I extend my gratitude to the crews for their hard work and dedication for safe restoration efforts. We commend their work and dedication following the widespread damages from both weather events and challenges brought on by a tornado in the middle of the night.”
