AES Ohio volunteers participate in annual day of service at Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark

October 23, 2024

AES Ohio, a subsidiary of The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES) a subsidiary of The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES), employees, leaders and retirees will spend today working to improve, enhance and beautify Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark.

In its fourth year, AES Ohio Day in the Parks is the company’s signature community project and largest volunteer event. The 2019 Memorial Day Tornadoes caused significant and devastating damage to several residential areas and a popular park near downtown Dayton. Wegerzyn MetroPark, an 88-acre park, was in the path of the tornadoes losing hundreds of bur oaks, silver maples, and sycamores — some planted generations ago — which included habitats for animals and birds. Since then, Five Rivers MetroParks has worked alongside the community to help these areas rebound and heal.

“Five years have passed since the Memorial Day Tornadoes and AES Ohio is here to continue replanting in those damaged areas that are essential to our region’s diverse habitats for families to enjoy,” said Tom Raga, President of AES Ohio.

This year’s main projects are planting trees and constructing and installing new tree cages near the Stillwater River. Volunteers will also handle maintenance like weeding, pruning, edging, and mulching. Wegerzyn Gardens actively promotes landscaping with native plants in balance with traditional selections to protect the region's natural heritage. AES Ohio’s top priority is safety. All volunteers participating will attend a safety briefing prior to starting the projects.
