Questions or concerns about EV ownership? Find answers to common electric vehicle questions.

Electric vehicles and equipment are quiet, clean and efficient. They also offer drivers the opportunity to save money on fuel and maintenance costs, reduce their environmental impact and contribute to the energy independence of the US by using a domestically produced source of energy. Learn more.

While the upfront cost for an electric vehicle may be higher than a traditional vehicle, the ongoing fuel and maintenance costs should be much less. EV owners should expect to see an increase in their electricity usage; however, this is much less than the price of gasoline or diesel fuel – approximately equivalent to paying $1.35 per gallon for gasoline.

Not at this time. However, we do offer incentives and rewards through our Off-Peak EV Charging Rewards program for customers who charge their vehicles overnight.

AES Ohio will continue to explore investments in electric vehicle infrastructure and other rate structures that may benefit electric vehicle owners. Any changes are subject to review and approval by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO).

Most vehicles can charge on a standard 120-volt outlet, so you may be able to use an existing outlet. Many customers choose to have a 240-volt Level 2 charging station for faster charging. If you choose to do this, please call our Construction Control Center at 800-253-5801 at least two weeks in advance so we can ensure the electric equipment delivering energy to your home can support this.

Consult a licensed electrician for the installation of a Level 2 charger and wiring. A reputable EV dealership may be able to recommend a local installer in your area. Level 2 charging station outlets are similar to those of a clothes dryer. If you choose to install one of these chargers, you may be eligible for our Off-Peak EV Charging Rewards program which will help to cover some of your installation and charging costs.

The best time to charge your car is when everyone else is using less energy. You should especially avoid charging your car on hot, humid summer afternoons and evenings when fans and air conditioners are running continuously.

We recommend charging overnight so that you can take advantage of our EV Off-peak Rewards program. EV Off-peak Rewards pays you up to $100 per year for charging during off peak hours which are defined as 8:00 PM-8:00 AM for the Off-Peak EV Charging Rewards program. Learn more.

Customers will receive incentives for enrollment and successful participation. Participants also contribute to reducing stress on the grid during peak times, which benefits all customers by avoiding system upgrade costs.

Only certain chargers can communicate with the software that supports the program. We are continually evaluating charger models to inform prioritization of additions to the software. If you would like to suggest a product to add to our qualified product list, please submit product information to our team.

Customers can work with any contractor, as long as the contractor is properly licensed for the work performed. Customers may also consider selecting contractors who have received specific EV charging certification through the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Training Program.
